Empowering Women Through Crotchet Skills and Conversation

Discover the transformative power of our Sprout Skills and Conversation Café, where women come together to learn new skills, exchange ideas, and support each other.
African women in general need to know that it’s OK for them to be the way they are – to see the way they are as a strength, and to be liberated from fear and from silence.
At Sprout Women Empowerment Trust, we believe in the power of dialogue, skill-sharing, and community support to uplift and empower women and girls. That’s why we’re thrilled to share the success story of our Sprout Skills and Conversation Café, where women come together to exchange ideas, learn new skills, and discuss pressing issues affecting their lives.
The Sprout Skills and Conversation Café serves as a dynamic platform for women to not only learn practical skills but also engage in meaningful conversations about topics that matter most to them. From starting income-generating programs to addressing gender-based violence (GBV), this space is dedicated to empowering women and fostering community resilience.
In October 2022, we organized a session focused on teaching women and girls how to make chunky crochet baskets. This initiative aimed to provide unemployed women and girls with valuable skills that can help them create sources of income and become more financially independent. We firmly believe that economic empowerment is key to reducing vulnerability and empowering women to lead fulfilling lives.
During the session, we were honored to welcome partners from Bongai Shamwari, including Christa and Elizabeth from Germany, who joined us in learning and sharing experiences. Together, we not only learned crochet skills but also engaged in important discussions about gender-based violence and its root causes.
The women bravely shared their experiences and highlighted poverty, water shortages, infidelity, and unemployment as significant factors contributing to violence in their homes. Through open and honest dialogue, we were able to provide a safe space for women to express themselves, seek support, and offer solidarity to one another.
As we continue to organize Sprout Skills and Conversation Café sessions, our hope is to bring about meaningful change in the lives of women and girls. By providing opportunities for skill development, fostering dialogue, and addressing pressing issues such as GBV, we are empowering women to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
Join us in our mission to empower women and create lasting change through skills, conversation, and community support. Together, we can build a more inclusive and resilient society where every woman and girl can thrive.
