Ensuring food security at local level during the COVID pandemic

Covid 19 has brought a lot of challenges specifically to women. Ensuring food security at local level during the COVID pandemic is our mission as Sprout Women Empowerment Trust. We have been busy with oyster mushroom farming and the promotion of organic backyard gardens.

We have to find ways to put food on the table during these hard times we are proud to be playing our part. Our work focuses on how home gardens and mushroom growing can fit into the livelihood system of the peri urban poor in the communities to meet interrelated concerns of food security, nutrition, health and economic security.

Benefits to our beneficiaries include:

  • income and enhanced peri urban employment
  • improved food security;
  • increased availability of food and better nutrition through food diversity;
  • environmental benefits from recycling water and waste nutrients into food production.
